In this modern day and age so very many people suffer from uneasiness, depression, stress or anxieties. Here's a brief overview of the various causes, seen from different perspectives. Please bear in mind that it is often a combination of several factors combining that makes us feel uneasy and down; let's check it out now and then, let's get started and do something about it!

De-hydration De-hydration is a proven cause of depression and stress. So many people drink mainly beverages that dehydrate their bodies like coffee, teas, soft drinks and alcohol, and kind of forget/neglect to replenish the water we loose in various ways... Just remember that our bodies are made up of at least 75 percent water! Reduce the above mentioned beverages and drink plenty of pure and clean water for a quick 'pick-me up'!

Malnutrition Malnutrition is a major cause of depression and both physical and mental stress. What? How is that possible when large majorities in the developed world are overweight or obese?
Yes, it does sound a bit strange and yet it is very true. Most fast foods and many over-processed modern foods lack the real nutritional values the body needs for its proper functioning. Instead they are full of trans-fatty acids (that are essentially not digestible) and other bad fats, besides containing a 'cocktail' of various harsh chemicals like artificial preservatives, flavorings, colors, artificial 'vitamins', etc. (For more information, please follow some of the these links). |
| |
Imbalance of chemicals in the brain? This theory is being pushed by big drug companies producing anti-depressants, but in reality it is just that - an unproven theory with most questionable results: SSRI-inhibitors like Prozac have the same 'success' rate as the placebo effect of sugar pills! Even worse, the acknowledged side-effects (read the official warnings on the labels) range from drastic weight gains, impotence, insomnia, stress and anxieties, to depression (!) severe addiction, and increased risks of suicide or violent behavior. |
| |
Environmental factors There are a multitude of environmental factors that affect how we live and feel, e.g. direct and ambivalent noise pollution causes stress of all kinds as numerous studies have shown, including increased risks of heart attacks. Other studies have determined a direct link between a lack of sunlight exposure with the increasing numbers of depressed people in the UK.
The 'official' jury is still out on the negative effects from numerous pollutants in our air, water and food supplies and yet, parents of kids suffering from ADHD reported a complete recovery upon eliminating preservatives and other additives from their diet. |
| |
Drugs It doesn't really matter whether we abuse pharmaceutical drugs, legal drugs like alcohol and nicotine, recreational drugs, or the 'hard' ones. The desire to experience a little bit of a 'high' feeling is quite natural according to Johann Wolfgang Goethe, but the more often we indulge in the very highs the more often we will also experience the very lows, a.k.a. depression. When we overdo it, the body simply needs to eliminate the toxins and re- balance itself in various ways. |

Major physical problems Major physical problems like brain tumors, cancers etc. may lead to physical and mental stress, and depression. |

The world today The world today seems to be moving so much faster than ever before in the history of mankind. Not so long ago one had plenty of time to respond to a letter as it took weeks to travel around the world anyway. Nowadays with the advent of email, people expect to hear back within 24 hours, otherwise it supposedly shows a lack of interest, politeness or worse...
The modern world stresses competition rather than cooperation, and that alone is a cause of lot's of rush and stress. And ultimately, anxieties and depression to various degrees. |
| |
Social conditioning There are many things we learn as we grow up, but not everything is good for our health and wellbeing. Many mind sets we pick up -- in the family, school, professional life, and so on -- are very detrimental to our success and happiness, e.g. being attracted or used to seeing 'the-dark-side' of life, thus experiencing it more often ourselves. |
| |
"No hope, no future" It is not just the young kids anymore that get affected by this mindset. A world full of war zones, poverty, disease, famine, racism, pollution, injustice... we all know what is happening out there, to various degrees of course, and we all have to learn how to live with it and be happy nevertheless -- while contributing our bit to identifying and implementing the necessary solutions. |
| |
Regrets, resentments and anger Such emotions can accumulate over a lifetime unless we learn to deal with them, from releasing the old to preventing the accumulation of new negative energies. |
| |
Fears Fears of all kinds produce anxieties and lead to depression. These days a multitude of organizations of all kinds consciously peddle fear in order to manipulate us to do something or buy something, whatever it may be. And the ultimate fear is of course fear of death, the fear of ceasing to exist; it can lead to severe depression, consciously or sub-consciously. |
| |
Loneliness Many people don't take their time anymore to really cultivate and enjoy meaningful relationships with others, from family to friends and colleagues, even with their own partners. And many singles too are so busy trying to be always so 'cool' that they end up even more lonely and depressed. |
| |
Lack of purpose With so many choices available, many people have become bored with their lives, following automatic daily routines, without having clear goals or a deeper sense of purpose in their lives. |
| |
Grief Loosing a loved one is perhaps the most difficult situation anyone has to face, sooner or later; it can lead to extreme depression and the complete loss of our desire to live on. Partner split-ups and 'lovers blues' are mostly a mild form of grief, and so is the loss of property. |
| |
Guilt Feelings of guilt are a first-class joy-killers as they prevent us -- consciously or sub-consciously -- from allowing ourselves to have a good time; ultimately it can lead to severe depression. |
| |
Hyper-sensitivity Many people have become much more 'tuned-in' to the flow of life and its energies and become very sensitive, some overly so to the point of literally feeling the pains of the world, way beyond the calls of normal empathy and compassion. |
| |
Affluenza Many of us in the developed or 'rich' countries have already everything we need for living a very comfortable life, and more. Several studies have shown that -- after reaching a certain level of material comfort -- countries that kept growing richer in terms of GDP per person have actually experienced a decline in personal satisfaction and happiness, and a corresponding increase in depression and anxieties. |
| |
Perfectionism Being a perfectionist in an imperfect world can be a difficult proposition; from frustration and anger it can lead to feelings of despair, helplessness and depression. |

| |
Feeling disconnected As the world moves faster and growing ever more complex and fragmented, an increasing number of people feel disconnected to their inner self, and the bigger flows of life, love and happiness. |
| |
The wrong priorities Many of us are pursuing the wrong things in life and going against our deepest inner desires, passions and dreams. This can become a real 'downer' even if we're not consciously aware of it. |
| |
An incomplete sense of identity Some people have an incomplete sense of who they are; they strongly and exclusively identify themselves with purely external labels like, being a male, an Italian, a baker, and so on.
These labels do not make up the 'whole' person with many interest, feelings, abilities, social interactions, and so on. |
| |
Other meta-physical issues There are other meta-physical issues that can bring about feelings of uneasiness, despair and depression: A general lack of awareness or fulfillment, suppressed memories and responsibilities of a distant past that we may not be aware of, and other matters that happen on subtle energetic levels while interacting with people and the world. |
